New version of this calculator lets you quickly select and verify working type sizes. The type size is calculated based on visual acuity and critical viewing angle, factors that actually determine legibility.
Calculation rests on two parameters: viewing distance and the critical angle for perceiving stroke width. Modifiers are applied for projection angle (oblique viewing), crowding effect (background density), and surrounding contrast. Result: precise type size in metric or imperial units.
